4BH Radio Mast Wynnum West |
|
When this 80 metre high radio mast was toppled onto swamp land by vandals, the reconstruction process presented many challenges, which required thinking outside of the box.
Access on site was impossible for large trucks with materials and equipment having to loaded onto a flat bottom punt, and towed by a pozi-track loader. One particular technical challenge was the repair and commissioning of the damaged “earth mat” which comprised of hundreds of copper wires laid underground and radial to the tower. Metal detection equipment was used to locate each wire for testing. The difficult site conditions coupled with the extreme height of the structure and the changing weather conditions at the time, called for special attention in preparing workplace health and safety plans. |
